Summer Art Workshop Student Exhibition
Summer Art Workshop Student ExhibitionThe Art Central Foundation (ACF) is pleased to announce the culmination of our Summer Art Workshops (SAW), with an exhibition of work produced by the students. The SAW exhibition will remain installed at Miami Middletown Downtown on the first floor of the Temple Arts Building at 4 N. Main St until September 22nd. During the SAW 2009, 4 two week sessions were offered in four different visual art subjects: 2-Dimensional, 3-Dimensional, Clay & Fine Craft. The classes had a maximum of 12 students, with two classes a day for 3-5 graders & one class a day for 6-8 graders. The show includes over 100 examples of student selected work from each of these classes. The students were nominated by their school art teachers. The criteria for nomination were an interest in the visual arts, good behavior & financial need that might prohibit them from seeking traditional art instruction. There was no cost to the students for the workshops. The instructors were, for the most part, art teachers in Middletown public schools. The classes that reached, or came close to capacity, also had student aides to assist the instructors. These were young volunteers from the region who are interested in the arts. The SAW students, instructors and aides were be in attendance, as well as members of the Art Central Foundation Board of Directors & local VIPs. For the Summer Art Workshops of 2009, the ACF received a grant from the Middletown Community Foundation for partial funding, with additional funding from the Ohio Arts Council & Target. The classes were held in the Art Central Foundation’s new facility on the second floor of the Temple Arts Building at 4 N Main St. We at the Art Central Foundation were very excited to offer this opportunity to these young artists and believe that this has been a successful continuation of mentoring experiences for area youth in the arts. We hope you will be able to stop into one of Miami Middletown Downtown’s events & view the work sometime during the run of the exhibition. Gallery

The exhibit will open Friday, August 7th with a reception from 6-8 pm and will continue through August 29th.“The Masonic Temple, 1940” depicts the Temple as it was during that year; historic photographic images were used by the artist as reference material. A couple of vintage cars are parked in front. The original was done in watercolor. The print is a limited edition of 300 and will retail at $65. The Art Central Foundation is very grateful to the artist, Pat Brewer, for her willingness to take the commission of the original painting, as well as waiving any commission on the sale of the prints. “The community of artists in Middletown has always been very supportive of the efforts of the Art Central Foundation and we hope that other such projects can be established in the future.” “The Masonic Temple, 1940” can be purchased at Artique Gallery (513-422-4435), the Middletown Art Center (513-424-2416) or on-line at the ACF website artcentralfoundation.org
Art Central Foundation Announces new home in the Art Central DistrictThe Art Central Foundation (ACF) is pleased to announce our new facility located on the second floor of the Temple Arts Building in the Art Central District of historic downtown Middletown. The ACF was founded in 2005 to promote the arts in Middletown’s downtown through events, partnerships with other arts organizations and mentoring youth in the arts. This is a huge step for our organization. We are happy to have a presence in the District and ecstatic that this historic building is once again being used. The building was Middletown’s original the Masonic Temple and dates back to the 1890’s. It was used by the Masons until the 1970’s, when a new Temple was build closer to the highway. In the 1990’s, a local theater company, the Rising Phoenix, occupied the building for almost ten years. The top floors have remained unused since the company’s dissolution several years ago. Many volunteer hours have been spent readying the facility for its inaugural program, the ACF’s Summer Art Workshops (SAW). These are two week in depth art classes focusing on specific artistic media. The workshops are offered at no cost to children that might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend traditional summer art camps due to financial constraints. The young artists are nominated by their school art teachers and then go through a selection process to be accepted into the program. Over 100 children will participate in SAW 2009. Further use of the building will include offices for the Art Central Foundation as well as meeting space for the ACF. As renovations continue, the Temple Arts Building will be the ideal location for two of the Foundation’s fundraising events, A Taste of the Rose Wine Tasting & the annual Mardi Gras party. The space will also be made available to other groups for meetings and events. A public preview of the building is planned for this holiday season, in conjunction with the opening of the GOT ART! exhibit and the city’s official tree lighting ceremony on Sunday, November 22, 2009.

Summer Art Workshops BeginThe Art Central Foundation (ACF) is pleased to announce the launch of our 2009 Summer Art Workshops (SAW) for area youth, which began the week of June 15th. There are four different classes, each focusing on a different visual art process: 2 Dimensional, Clay, Fine Craft & 3 Dimensional. Each class will run for 2 weeks, five days a week, for three hours a day and has two sessions a day for younger students (grades 3-5) and one session a day for older students (grades 6-8). The students were nominated by their school art teacher this spring and went through a selection process to be placed in a class. The teachers will include several projects for the children, highlighting different aspects of the media, as well as its historical & cultural significance. Some classes will include guest artists or possible field trips. The instructors are, for the most part, art teachers from the Middletown public schools. The exceptions are two art studio majors at area colleges; Sarah Roof, who attends Maimi University & Kate McIntosh, who attends Ohio State. The classes that reach, or come close to capacity, will also have student aides to assist the instructors. These are young volunteers from the region who are interested in the arts. The ACF should reach over 100 area youth with this program. This is the Art Central Foundation’s third venture into youth workshops, the first being a Pottery Workshop in 2007, funded by a grant from the Dave & Carole Schul Fund. This year, the ACF received two grants from the Middletown Community Foundation, including Summertime for Youth funding from the MCF’s Youth Council & Target Community Grant for partial funding of these workshops. There is no cost for the participants of the workshop. We at the Art Central Foundation are very excited to offer this opportunity to these young artists and hope that this will be a successful continuation of mentoring experiences for area youth in the arts.
